New York and New Yorker: love confession

Ah, there is no other city on the planet, that is so crazy, vital, unique, tough, different, creative and surreal as New York. Either you love it or hate it. On Saturday, as we were in the City, it really attracted my attention. I love this City, I feel it, it amazes me. And the people make it. It's a mass of people here, for sure, but on the other side, everyone is different. And I didn't see any other place where every single individual will try to stand out so consequently.

And here you go!

The Barnes & Nobles bookstores http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnes_and_Nobles. It's a huge company. Currently under pressure of Amazon (yes, internet is disrupting traditional businesses, including centuries old book publishing), but still carrying 689 bookstores across the country. This store is located on Union Square.
You see, people are sitting and reading.

Is it me or the people? Somehow it feels, well, I don't know, they are so many and they are sitting for so long... They don't just come to buy a book and go home. No, it's another culture. It's just so freaky!

On the other floor with children's books there is a large space for playing for kids.

Like an indoor playground, right?

And of course, there are some special events the store is offering.

Not bad, right? Chelsea Clinton and Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, one of the most powerful women in this business. 2012 magazine Times called her one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
And here, in NYC everything happens right here, right now. And everything is possible.

On the third floor in this bookstore locates Starbucks cafe. It's also typical. Barnes & Noble have a strong cooperation with Starbucks. The first Barnes & Noble store to feature Starbucks was in New Jersey in 1993. And since 2004 all cafes there offer WiFi. I think, that was a crucial point. People come here and work and sit and sit for hours. You barely can find a single free chair, don't even talk about a free table.

Nowhere you can see people like here.

Born to eat?

Today I was looking over the pictures I did last time and found out, pretty much of them were made during the eating process: eating at home with the guests, eating at restaurants, Starbucks etc. I guess, it became my natural reflex: we are sitting at the table and I'm pooling out my phone to make a picture...

Anyway, here I want to share with you some of these kind of moments.

Last Saturday I drove Jonathan to his first lesson at Lee Strasberg Institute (You remember? He liked it by the way, especially learning fake fighting, dancing and making new friends:)). Union Square in NYC is full of life and one of the most exciting places in the city http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Square_(New_York_City).  So, after dropping off Jonathan Jessi, Fioirna and me were looking for a place to eat. The choice felt pretty easy. Max Brenner, a chocolate place http://www.maxbrenner.com/. Jessi was visiting it once on a birthday party of her school friend and liked it.

We stopped by.

We ate.

We drunk.

And we liked it.

Next eating station is Kiku in Alpine, just 10 minutes from us. It's a japanese restaurant, great place for family visits or friend companies.

The cooks make a nice stove show just in front of you. They throw vegetable slices and you try to catch them with your mouth, they make fire and a toy fireman deletes it, they are playing with the knifes etc. It is really fun and the kids love it!

And the food is also good.

Starbucks. "Everybody knows... " (Leonard Cohen, I can't help me:)) A place to get a coffee, to eat, to work, to charge your phone and to read...

Honestly I have to admit that in the last time Angelique is getting a competitor. Farmhouse in Cresskill became another good place to meet and hang out with the friends.

During the holidays we got an unexpected visit from brother of my german israeli friend Shirley. Lior was on the way from Stuttgart to Dominican and had a short stop by in New York. And here we are.

So, I think at least now you are inclined to get something delicious and tasty, right? Of course, if you are not constrained by your diet new year resolutions:).

Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute

Спешу поделиться с Вами приятной новостью. В субботу мы с детьми ездили в Манхетен, что само по себе новостью не является. Но там у нас, т.е. у Йонатана было назначено интервью в Институте театра и кино им. Ли Страсберга http://www.methodactingstrasberg.com/.

Теперь предыстория.
Летом в поисках лагеря или какой-то другой программы для детей наткнулась на это заведение. (Йонатан, что бы ты хотел летом делать? Сниматься в кино! (Уже не помню, возможно вопрос был задан как раз после просмотра какого-то фильма на ТВ:). Вообще-то телевизор у нас почти под запретом. Можно смотреть 15 минут в день, и то не всегда.))

Институт Ли Страсберга - одно из самых известных заведений в области театра и кино. В нем учились Анджелина Джоли, Аль Пачино, Настасия Кински, Алекс Болдуин, Барбара Страйзанд, Мерилин Монро, ... и далее по списку .  Есть 2 филиала, в Голливуде и Нью Йорке.

Ну вот, и у них есть программа для детей 7-12 лет. Летом мы уезжали и что-то у нас не сложилось. И нас поставили в лист ожидания. Мне кажется, что в Нью Йорке везде и на все есть свой лист ожидания.

Вобщем, я и сама уже успела подзабыть об этой истории. И тут вдруг пару дней назад приходит мейл. У нас появилось несколько мест на зимнюю сессию. Нужно согласовать время для интервью, заполнить анкеты и т.д.

Анкета, надо сказать, тоже не совсем простая. Свободно ли владеете английским? Есть ли у вас виза или грин-карта? Сделайте пояснение к визе. В какой стране родились? Израиль. Гражданство какой страны имеете? Германии. В какой стране живете? США. :).
Ну, и естественно, 50 долларов приложить за подачу заявления. Просто так. Без возврата. Чтобы с Вами поговорили.

Йоник был все это время очень спокоен. Но с утра в субботу начал нервничать. Не поеду, не буду, не хочу. Я ему: Да ты сначала попробуй, пусть они тебя возьмут, а потом будешь не хотеть. И вообще все это ерунда, take it easy, мы тебя и так любим. Самое главное, удалось не пообещать ему чего-то (Лего, сладости, ...).

Смешной момент был в машине. Он спрашивает: А они меня мучать будут? Я: Да ты что! Разве стала бы я тебя в такое место посылать, где тебя будут мучать?

Наконец приехали. Это в районе Union Square. Там, кстати, было какое-то невероятное скопление Дедов Морозов. Наверное, какой-то парад у них был.

Заходим. Немного подождали. За это время приняли еще одну девочку лет 12 и одну поставили в список ожидания. Появляется директор программы для детей, Аманда. Ну что, кого я буду сейчас мучать? Мы с Йонатаном переглянулись, а потом тихонько посмеялись. Телепатия.

Она увела его. Минут через 15-20 возвращается уже с бумагами: He is wonderful! (Как он сказал, у него спросили, какие фильмы он любит. Видел ли он этот фильм? Нет. А этот? Нет. А этот? Да. Еще что-то. Он должен был закричать громко как может. Это все, что мне удалось из него выудить...)

Так что, с января по субботам Йонатан будет учиться с 10 до 16 часов актерскому мастерству, танцам (Gangam style он уже освоил:)) и кино (где они снимают на камеру сцены и потом их разбирают). Это обязательные классы и на выбор музыкальный театр или сценический. Как и все здесь, стоят классы совсем недешево. Это как с колледжами. Сначала попади в престижный колледж, а потом думай, как оплачивать... И попасть действительно непросто. Потому как, те, кто, уже попали, берут классы постоянно. И попасть можно только, если кто-то решил больше не продолжать (дорого или не нравится).

Конечно, мы рады. И Йоник очень рад. Я не сильно заморачиваюсь по этому поводу. Главное, чтобы ему нравилось. Просто это опыт и возможность, которую ребенок может попробовать. Почему бы нет?

После интервью мы пошли на базар (на Union Square совершенно замечательный базар), купили немного веток к Новому году,

ржаного хлеба (они там его предлагали попробовать, подогревая его с кусочками сыра. Как сказал Йоник, ничего вкуснее в своей жизни не пробовал! Теперь делаю ему дома, уплетает за обе щеки:)), выпили горячего яблочного сайдера, поиграли на площадке и поехали домой.
